The Staycation

The Staycation, that overused word the media has coined. Well, that's what we're doing this week that Brian is off. Yesterday afternoon, we took the kids to Sea World for some fun. Although, Paige did not think the Shark Encounter was fun at all. She kept asking Brian, "Are they going to eat me?" She was not really grasping the concept that the sharks would not be able to get to her behind the glass. I must say though that Sea World does play ominous music as you walk through. However, she snapped right out of it when she was able to touch the manta rays while Nick tried to feed them paper towels. Oy, that kid. No harm was done to the rays, thanks to my quick reflexes. The best part of Sea World, letting the kids run around the play area. There were no complaints going to bed last night. Priceless.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

I love to change my haircolor on a regular basis. I just get bored of the same thing after months and months. This time, I actually chose a color that is as close to my natural haircolor I could find. I did my best to cover those stubborn grays, and voila, this is the end product: As I look at this picture, I'm noticing a lot more wrinkles. Is botox calling my name? Probably not for me. I'm so freaked out by needles, I don't think I have the courage. And yippee for Paige, Nick, and me, Brian is off this week, so we're hoping to get in some quality family time as well as accomplish some of the home projects we've been wanting to get done.
And for some worrisome news: Eric came by yesterday and when he was petting Nemo behind the ears noticed a pretty sizable lump on his neck. We're taking him in tomorrow afternoon to the vet, so I'm praying to the giant labrador retriever loving guy in the sky that he's in perfect health and that this will be nothing to worry about, but it's so hard not to.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Nick loves to help out around the house. His latest chore has been to water the plants on the patio. Please don't report me to the water authority people because most of the time the water lands everywhere but on the plants. And with the water shortage, well, someone might want my head. But, how can I resist his eagerness to be mommy's helper?

Early Drawings of Man

I love to watch Paige doodle and draw, and she has now entered the stage of drawing people. This one is called "Daddy". I can actually make out the eyes and mouth. But, doesn't she realize Brian does not have that much hair?
In other Unit news:
Our tickets for Wicked came in the mail today. Yahoo! I love getting a fun surprise like that versus the usual junk we get. It's coming to town in July and we're going for our anniversary. I read the book years before the musical was made and I've been dying to see it ever since it came out. We also got tickets for Lion King (Oct.) and 101 Dalmatians (June '10). The plan is to introduce Paige to the theater at her impressionable young age.
Earlier this week, we had a water main break in our area. We got the reverse 911 call early Monday morning and were told we had to exclusively use bottled water and/or boiled water for 72 hours. All the restaurants closed and it felt like a ghost town around here. These are the times I'm so glad we have a stockpile of water and dried goods in our garage because, well, you just never know.

Morning Paper

I love when the kids mock our routines. Here's Nick "reading" the morning paper. This particular section was provided by the Humane Society with pictures of animals in need of homes. While reading, Nick would say "doggie".

T-Ball

This video clip was created just for Uncle E, our baseball coach extraordinaire. Look how Paige steps up to the tee ready to show her brother the ropes. And Nick, he's quite the ball boy. They make a great pair. Now we just need seven nieces or nephews to field our team. No pressure.

Sweet Moment

Last night Brian went with Eric to a game at the World Baseball Classic while I stayed home with the kids. After baths and before bedtime, I let them watch a show together. I left the room for a quick minute and when I returned, I found the two of them cuddled up on the couch. I immediately ran for the camera so I could catch the sweet moment. Now I have proof that they do in fact love each other and just might save it for later use (maybe during the teenage years).

No Good Quiet

Quiet is never good, in terms of the kids that is. In this case, quiet means "we are up to no good." Case in point: Last night, the kids were bathed, in their pajamas, and just about ready for bed. While Brian and I were stealing a couple moments to get into our comfy clothes, I noticed a muffled silence out of Nick's room. It took me a second or two to question, "hmmm...how could Paige and Nick be in a room together in silence?" As I walked into his room, I saw an opened jar of Cetaphil cream. Next to it were the kids, all lathered up on the hands and face. I think they took down a third of the jar with huge smiles on their faces. Brian and I couldn't help but look at each other and break into laughter. The only thing we didn't get a chance to do was take a picture. Maybe next time.

New Wheels

I got a new bike! The last time I got a new bike was in elementary school, so this is very exciting for me. I test rode a couple and went with the very first one. We even got it equipped with a bike seat for one of the kids. Today we took the bikes down to Mission Bay to ride around. The kids had so much fun hanging out on the back. And, Brian and I enjoyed the quality family time.

The Princess Ps

We are in full-on princess mode in the Unit household. Paige loves to play with her princess dolls, the ones you can interchange the dresses and shoes daily. When we go to the library, she heads straight for the shelf with all the Disney books. She also loves to doll up in dresses, crowns, gloves, jewelry, and shoes. It doesn't matter that the dresses are starting to tatter or that her crown has lost its luster, she transforms each and every time. Even Pinky gets in on the action.

Swimsuits in March

Once again we are experiencing strange weather. Today's forecast: hot & muggy with high winds. Not the usual for sunny San Diego. The kids got so overheated at the park after gymnastics class that we came home, put on the swimsuits, and played in the Elmo sprinkler in the backyard. This was the first time Nick played in the sprinkler and he loved it.

In other news: Last Friday, at playgroup, Nick was trying to get on Paige's tricycle when it tipped over. He then scraped his mouth on the curb, tearing up his lip and upper gum. After the bleeding subsided, we were able to assess the situation which, frankly, wasn't looking so good. Today, I took him into the dentist for an xray and the good news is everything looks fine. No loose or broken teeth. Phew!
